The details of the Writtle Wanderers 1st Tour are a little hazy, but we visited Gent in Belgium to take part in their Annual Easter Rugby Tournament. This Tournament has been running for many years and has been attended in the past by the Anglia Old Lags.
With tough competition from other English, French, Belgium, Dutch and German sides, the Writtle side put up an excellent display to make it through to the final against Sleaford RFC from Lincolnshire. A very tight game resulted in a controversial win for Sleaford with their last minute penalty kick being adjudged to have gone between the somewhat makeshift uprights - despite the protestations of many impartial spectators!
Writtle disappointment was in part compensated for by the award of Man of the Tournament to Writtle's Jon Day, who had had a huge influence on every game despite his all night drinking exploits!
