Writtle Wanderers 1st XV faced their first full match of the
season against a well organised and drilled Chelmsford 1st XV at Fox Burrows
Lane. The Wanderers knew that they would have a tough game on their hands
in this local derby, with Chelmsford wanting revenge after defeat in the same
fixture last season.
Five minutes into the game the Wanderers lost hooker, Dave 'Wobble' Hyett, after
a clash of heads in a tackle left him needing stitches to a cut above the
eye. With front row replacement, Dom Pearce, arriving a few minutes late,
the game temporarily continued with uncontested scrums. During this time,
the Chelmsford scrum half took advantage of some poor defending to dummy and
jink his way under the posts from 15 yards out.
Pearce took to the field for the restart and Writtle were able
to reorganise. However, they found it hard to make ground into Chelmsford
territory and when they did they were unable to turn pressure into points.
A series of penalties saw them pushed back in the own half and having to defend.
Despite the lack of numbers at training the previous week, the defence seemed
reasonably well organised, but Chelmsford were able to score again just before
the break after the Wanderers conceded a penalty at the line out for foul play.
After the break a nasty incident resulted in two players being lost from the
game. One of the Chelmsford props received a red card following the use of the
boot in the ruck and the Wanderers' Welsh miner, Colin Jones, was forced to seek
hospital treatment for a gash to the head.
With Chelmsford reduced to 14 players and the scrums once
again uncontested, Writtle looked to press home their numerical advantage.
For ten minutes it looked like the game was swinging the hosts' way, with
pressure being exerted on the Chelmsford midfield and play moving closer to the
Chelmsford line. It looked certain that the visitors' defence would break,
but before the Wanderers could get over the line, the referee awarded a penalty
try against Chelmsford for persistent infringements around the ruck. Tom
Clackson converted from under the posts.
Chelmsford composed themselves and came back strongly into the game and
Writtle's lack of fitness and organisation cost them dear, with two more tries
being conceded and make the final score 26 - 7 to Chelmsford.
It is clear that stepping up a level this year is going to be a tough task for
the Wanderers. In Essex 1 the required fitness levels are that bit higher,
the speed of the game is that bit quicker and the tackles are that bit harder.
If the Wanderers want to compete they must show more commitment and greater
ambition - and that doesn't just mean showing up for 80 minutes on a Saturday
afternoon! Training is on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at
Fox Burrows Lane...

The intrepid Writtle travellers arrived at Rochford on the back of a mauling last week at the hands of Upminster. The game started under light drizzle and Writtle immediately got the scoring underway thanks to a try from the returning Redfern dashing over the line. The lead was soon increased by the ever controlling Will Young and the youthful half back pairing of Rowan and Young was beginning to exert their control over the game.
The result never really looked in doubt as Writtle scored at regular intervals, with the hosts replying with a converted try from a scrum late in the first half. Writtle soon replied again with a well scored try by Club Leviathan Scott Taylor and soon after the restart Glenn Richards galloped onto a sublime chip from Rowan to score the try of the day. Further tries were scored at regular intervals and the result could have hit the 60 mark had Richards not turned down a 75 man overlap and fed the ball to Young who had a gap the size of "Big John" Stimpson's underpants in front of him. Good result and a cracking performance saw Skipper Coyle leave a happy man to celebrate his birthday in style with fizzy apple juice je suis!
